The Story of Zoë & Morgan

Our Story

Hi, we are Morgan, Ruth and Zoë. Siblings who love to create, connect and share our world.

Our parents taught us a deep respect for creativity, craft, nature and connection, and we carry these ideologies forward into all aspects of our lives; from our own families to our business, they are present in everything we do.

We love making jewellery, it brings us together to share our vision and inspiration. It’s a true privilege and an honour to be able to work together, doing something we feel so passionately about that connects us with our beautiful community and customers.

Crafting pieces from precious gemstones, silver & gold, creating jewellery with deep meaning and reverence.

We believe deeply in looking after our beautiful Papatūānuku, Earth mother, honouring the sacredness of our surroundings. From the food we eat, to the way we go about life, this plays a major role in what we do, and goes to the very core of how we run our business.

Thank you for being on this journey with us, and for celebrating with us your own journeys.

We choose love,
Morgan, Ruth & Zoë x

Our Intergenerational Family Story

Making jewellery is in our DNA. As babies, our father Douglas, a traditional silver and goldsmith, put himself inside the wooden playpen so we could crawl and learn to stand up, watching him make jewellery.

Born in Argentina, Douglas chose to make jewellery to live the life he enjoyed - to travel extensively and mix with people from different backgrounds, inspired by nature and drawn to subtle worlds.  His seminal period was living and working in Ibiza before electricity came, a time of remarkable energy on this beautiful remote island in the Mediterranean, where he opened his first shop, Moonbird.

Douglas met our wonderfully creative mother Anna in the beautiful English countryside of the Cotswolds, the place where we were born; first Morgan, then Ruth and Zoë. Here amongst the ancient meadows and birch tree copses, Anna consciously increased understanding between us when we were little, pointing out if one of us did something that showed love for one of the others, or if one of us was struggling, helping us to understand and care for each other; skills that are the foundation of our business ethic in a modern world.

A vision of peace in the Pacific (and a dislike for the cold) saw our family move to Aotearoa New Zealand, the birthplace of our paternal grandfather. We travelled by passenger ship, on which Zoë took her first steps, visiting Japan, Panama and Tahiti along the way.

The family settled in Devonport, a seaside suburb on Auckland’s North Shore, with an international community, and an organic food cooperative that Anna ran, championing natural whole food, and advocating against toxic sprays. There was always a house full of people, a spirit of generosity and productive creativity inspired by nature. Living well and in the moment, with the philosophy life is your art and art is life.

We went by ferry to the Steiner School and would visit our father at his Moonbird workshop on the way home, searching for snacks, and observing his craft as he set precious gemstones, unknowingly laying the foundation of our own jewellery making obsession.

As young adults we all moved around the globe, where Morgan went into the music industry, Zoë worked in designer millinery, and Ruth pursued a modelling career. In 2005 Morgan flew to India, returning with a pocket full of precious gemstones. Showing his treasure to Zoë reawakened a love of the process we had witnessed as children.  We made our first silver and gold vermeil pieces on a London kitchen table - and Zoë & Morgan was born… Officially launched in 2005, the brand debuted at Paris Fashion Week - and was instantly hailed as a success.

The solid gold and diamond Fine collection followed in 2008, marking a natural evolution in the brand, with a focus on elegantly crafted pieces designed to be both wearable and timeless. In 2014 we created the first Modern Love collection, re-defining the traditional engagement ring, quickly becoming sought after for bespoke and personal pieces that celebrate connection and limitless love

Now, as Zoë & Morgan approaches its 20 year anniversary, our pieces range from the ever-changing Contemporary collections, through to solid gold limited edition, Modern Love, and magnificent one-off bespoke pieces.  Morgan continues to scour the globe for rare and precious gemstones and Zoë finds new ways to cut and set them, always mindful of sustainable, ethical production.

The first ever iteration of the Moonbird logo is featured in our new collection Let The Sun Shine In, an ode to Douglas our father, and the legacy of his shops in Ibiza, the Cotswolds and Devonport.
Watch out for this in solid gold and other limited edition styles that we add to the mix every now and then. Know that the Moonbird stamp on your piece signifies quality, integrity, craftsmanship - and a conscious decision to choose love.
