Our Journals: Travel Guide to Rarotonga
The best way to start your day in Rarotonga?
A leisurely wake-up paired with a stroll around the island beach is exactly how we started most mornings. With everything at such a close distance to most resorts, you’ll stumble along a beachfront cafe no matter which way you walk.
Looking for coffee?
If you're looking to kick start your morning with a good coffee and a nourishing island-style smoothie bowl, head over to My Cousins Place in Muri Beach. They use organic Kōkako coffee beans and serve an incredible latte for all you coffee connoisseurs x
Spend the day on the water with a guided boat tour.
Once fuelled up and if the weather permits, I highly recommend supporting the local businesses through a glass bottom boat tour. There are two operating on the island, we went with Koka Lagoon Cruise. The proud staff on this cruise are entertaining, humorous and so much fun! The tour takes you to a sought after snorkelling spot in their crystal clear waters, followed by a traditional island bbq feast and endless entertainment on the ride home. It was a 10/10 day for the whole whanau.
If you’re after our favourite spots on the island for good food and even better cocktails, look no further than my recs below.
Soul Cafe
The perfect place to get your breakfast and brunch fix – the menu’s a great mix of Cook Island and Kiwi favs. Special shout out to the Pawpaw Boat, with house made baked granola and organic Greek yoghurt in a pawpaw half. Bliss!
Antipodes
When it comes to fine dining on Rarotonga, Antipodes takes the cake. Perched on the hillside of Black Rock, the Mediterranean inspired villa with three levels of dining area basks in wonderful views and sunsets. A beautiful dinner we’ll never forget. x
Palace Burgers
A cheap and cheerful takeaway for lunch, with burger specials ranging from $3.50! An essential for a quick post swim fuel.
Trader Jacks
Trader Jacks has been the island’s main social place since 1986, a true establishment on the island! A really yummy place to grab a pizza & great for groups.
Muri Night Markets
A must try on the island, the night markets are on Sunday, Tuesday – Thursday. With a bunch of local flavours and dishes, better to arrive earlier than later ~ especially on Sunday!
Happy travels
