Keshi Pearl

In the realm of the Japanese language, "Keshi" also carries the meaning of "poppy" and encompasses all pearls that blossom without a core or nucleus. Keshi pearls can come in various sizes and are not limited to a specific type of mollusc. Keshi pearls often reveal a luminous surface, casting an ethereal glow and are renowned for their unconventional, freeform shapes. While each pearl stands as a unique individual, they share the same color as the mother-of-pearl lining of the oyster. This means that variations of white keshis come from oysters that produce South Sea White Pearls and the smaller Japanese Akoya, while golden keshis originate from the oysters that create Golden South Sea Pearls, and darker hues are a result of Tahitian Black Pearls and Fijian Pearls.

South Sea Keshi Pearls

Australia and the Philippines are home to some of the most magnificent and largest South Sea Keshi pearls. These pearls typically come in white and golden hues, making them a regal choice for platinum, gold, and silver jewelry.

Tahitian Keshi Pearls

These are obtained from the French Polynesian island of Tahiti and are by-products of Tahitian Black pearls, known for their striking green and peacock hues.

Akoya Keshi Pearls

Originating primarily from Japan, these Keshi pearls are obtained from natural Akoya pearls and are renowned for their lustrous white hues. China and Vietnam are also notable sources of high-quality Akoya Keshi Pearls.

Pearls are relatively soft, ranking at 2.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes them susceptible to scratching and abrasion. With proper care, pearl jewellery can become a lasting treasure. Pearls are generally stable to light, but intense light can lead to dehydration and cracked nacre. They are also sensitive to chemicals and acids such as hairspray, perfume, cosmetics, and perspiration.

Ultrasonic and steam cleaners should never be used on pearls. Instead, occasional thorough cleaning with warm, soapy water is recommended. For routine care, wiping cultured pearls with a soft, clean cloth after each wearing is advised.
